About the Artist

SWPortrait

Hi! I’m Sarah: former art teacher, lifelong creative, and professional artist. Over the years, I’ve had many requests for watercolor classes, but life conspired and I never got it done.

Well now I’m ready! I tried to think about everything I wished I knew starting out, and I’ve added all that into the plan. These classes will take you from absolute beginner to confident watercolorist, and we’ll do it all in person, in very small groups (max of 6/class), from the cosy comfort of my firelit home in Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada.

Description

Capture Your Travels Through Ink & Watercolour

Join Sarah for a two-day immersive workshop exploring the beautiful and expressive Line & Wash technique—a combination of ink drawing and soft watercolour that brings scenes to life with both structure and softness.

This weekend is designed for students who already have a foundation in watercolour and are ready to expand their skills into storytelling through sketch and paint.

Saturday: Simplifying the Scene

The first day focuses on learning how to interpret and simplify reference photos. You’ll explore how to take a complex image and distill it into its most essential shapes, lines, and focal points. Through guided practice, Sarah will walk you step-by-step through this process before you select from a curated set of reference images to create your own Line & Wash composition.

Sunday: Sketching & Storytelling

On day two, you’ll loosen up with a series of quick watercolour sketches to build confidence and fluidity. From there, you’ll move into a more personal piece—working from a photo of your own travels. With Sarah’s guidance, you’ll transform your memory into a meaningful Line & Wash painting.

Why Line & Wash?

This technique offers a powerful way to document and relive your experiences. Sarah uses Line & Wash as a creative “scrapbook” of her travels—taking moments captured in photos and reinterpreting them through ink and paint. The process becomes more than just painting; it’s a way to revisit places, memories, and emotions in a lasting, artistic form.

Who This Workshop Is For

This workshop is best suited for students who already have a basic understanding of watercolour techniques. It is recommended that participants have completed Sarah’s Beginner Watercolour Weekend (or have equivalent experience) before registering.

Come ready to experiment, simplify, and tell your story—one brushstroke at a time.
