Watercolour Beyond the Basics is a series of project-based workshops designed to help you develop your watercolour skills while focusing on one key principle at a time. In this 4-hour workshop, we’ll explore colour theory—not just how the colour wheel works, but how understanding colour can help you make more intentional choices in your paintings.

We’ll begin by creating two colour wheels using different sets of primary colours, giving you a chance to see firsthand how your choice of primaries affects the colours you can mix. We’ll then explore and diagram different colour relationships, including complementary, analogous, and triadic colour schemes.

Finally, you’ll put those ideas into practice by creating a simple botanical watercolour painting using a colour relationship of your choice.

During this workshop, you will:

• Create two colour wheels using different primary colours
• Explore and diagram common colour relationships
• Experiment with colour mixing, harmony and contrast
• Learn how to make more intentional colour choices
• Create a botanical painting based on a colour relationship of your choice

You’ll leave with your colour studies, a finished botanical painting, and a better understanding of how colour choices can shape your future paintings.

Each Watercolour Beyond the Basics workshop stands on its own, so there’s no need to take them in order—simply choose the topics that interest you most.
